Prof. Dr. Abdo Karim Tourkmani is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He completed his Medical School in Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, from year 2000 to 2006.
He faced the MIR exam (entry to specialization Spanish exam) in 2007, qualifying amongst the top 10% for the whole of the candidates facing the exam on that year.
Prof. Tourkmani entered his training in the prestigious Fundacion Jimenez Diaz Hospital, where he finished his training in Ophthalmology in 2011. Given his excellent performance during his training, he was appointed right after as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in this same hospital.

In this same year (2011), Prof. Tourkmani passed the Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology exam, qualifying amongst the top 10% of the whole of the European candidates (position 42 amongst over 400 candidates).
In 2012, Prof. Tourkmani traveled to Mexico for his first fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery, where he could perform very complex surgeries for conditions that are rarely seen in European countries.
Upon completion of this fellowship, Prof. Tourkmani went on for a second senior complex cornea and complex cataract fellowship in Southampton General Hospital, where he broadened his surgical skills to the field of partial thickness corneal transplantation as well as anterior segment reconstructive surgery.
Prof. Tourkmani became then Consultant in Cornea in the NHS in 2017. Also in 2017, Prof. Tourkmani was recognized with the prestigious Surgeon of the Month Award by the International Society of Refractive Surgery / American Academy of Ophthalmology (ISRS / AAO), at the age of 34 (the second youngest to
ever receive this award) for his skills in cornea, cataract and anterior segment Amongst other achievements, Prof. Tourkmani successfully introduced
Bowman Layer Transplant in the UK, being today the only surgeon to ever perform this kind of surgery in the UK. He also popularized the use of DSEK lenticule for the management of corneal perforation, an approach deemed innovative by Prof. Tourkmani’s peers.
During his time as Consultant in the UK, Prof. Tourkmani obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from Ulster University with Distinction. The course directors were very impressed with Prof. Tourkmani’s performance in the course that he was offered an Honorary lecturer
role in the beginning, followed later by his appointment as Visiting Professor for Ulster University.
In 2023, Prof. Tourkmani was awarded the degree of chartered Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery for his contribution in the field of refractive surgery.
At present, Prof. Tourkmani is completing his PhD in Bowman Layer Transplant for keratoconus.

-Surgical experience:
Prof. Tourkmani has vast experience in cataract, refractive, cornea, and anterior segment surgery.
He regularly performs corneal grafts including cases of high complexity, as well as cataract surgeries including the most complex cases of subluxations or dislocations of the lens. Mr. Tourkmani's field of expertise also includes laser eye surgery procedures such as LASIK and PRK.

-Peer review publications:
Prof. Tourkmani has published 11 peer review papers in the most prestigious scientific journals in the topics of cornea transplant and keratoconus. He is still actively involved in research.

-Presentations:
Prof. Tourkmani regularly presents in the most prestigious international meetings, such as the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, where he is regularly an invited speaker and is used to present in front of large audiences. His presentations are mostly in the field of cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstructive surgery, corneal graft surgery, and refractive surgery.
